Elon Musk’s X Suspends ‘American’ Account Operating From Pakistan: ‘Joined In 2007, That Person Is Citizen By Now’

Billionaire Elon Musk’s platform, X, has rolled out a new feature that offers transparency by revealing key details related to user accounts. Through this feature, one can see the country of origin, verification date and username history. Now, people will become more aware about the accounts they interact with which makes the platform more open and transparent.

The rollout of this feature immediately drew attention when it uncovered surprising details about an account named “American" shared in post by a tech blogger. Despite being active on X for years, the profile was shown to be linked to the Pakistan App Store and based in Pakistan.

The account, which started in March 2007, had also undergone a username change in 2018. Following these revelations, the account was suspended.

Suspension Of ‘American’ X Account Draws Mixed Reactions

The suspension of the account named “American" raised many questions online. One user commented, “Why though? They can be American while living in Pakistan… or they just liked the username American."

Another added, “Suspended just because the user not from America?"

Someone else said, “Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad, but why are they getting suspended? What rules did they actually violate?"

While some users questioned the move, others supported it with one person writing, “Keep reporting all fake accounts PRETENDING to be Americans! They started to clean up this app, finally! I sure hope so."

An individual shared, “Wow! That is surprising! Oh, I have been checking my spam DM inbox to see where many of these ‘American’ accounts are coming from…& they are almost always overseas."

“I love the new feature for being able to see which country each account is from. Lots of poseurs out there," read another comment.

The feature also drew comparisons to other platforms with an individual asking, “I lowkey want to see this feature in Instagram now." In response, the tech blogger pointed out that Instagram has a similar feature but it is “more opaque" and does not always show accurate location.

Humour also surfaced in the discussion with one user joking, “Date joined, March 2007. That man is a citizen by now."

About Elon Musk’s X’s New Location Feature

The location information is now available through a new “about this account" tab on every profile. This tab displays details like verification date, username changes and country of origin. It also includes a note that location may be influenced by recent travel, temporary relocation or the use of virtual private networks (VPNs). But according to X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, the information is around 99 per cent accurate.
