The clash over Stargate is the latest chapter in a years-long dispute between Elon Musk and Sam Altman, who co-founded OpenAI together.
Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman traded barbs over Stargate, a $500 billion artificial intelligence infrastructure project announced by US President Donald Trump.
The project, to be funded by ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, was described by Trump as “a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential.” It will start with an initial $100 billion private investment, with Masayoshi Son, Oracle’s Larry Ellison, and Altman at the helm.
However, Musk, a close Trump adviser and head of DOGE, a government cost-cutting initiative, expressed skepticism within hours of the announcement. When OpenAI posted on X that it would begin deploying $100 billion immediately, the SpaceX CEO shot back: “They don’t actually have the money.” He later added, “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.”
