Indian-origin entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan’s appointment to a key AI advisory role in the incoming Trump administration has triggered widespread controversy. Some personalities on the far-right and right wing of the American political spectrum and some Republican Party backers were unhappy with President-elect Donald Trump’s choice.
Trump backer and billionaire Elon Musk, who will be leading a Department of Government Efficiency backed by the incoming president which will transform government efficiency by removing bureaucratic barriers, also backed the move.
On X, a social media site owned by him, he appeared to agree that Sriram was facing racist abuse from some Americans.
A racist image portraying Sriram Krishnan as a plate of butter chicken surfaced on X, sparking widespread outrage, with users condemning it as “disgusting" and “distasteful".
Butter chicken is a popular dish linked to Indian cuisine. “Here is what Sriram Krishnan would look like if he was butter chicken," an X user shared, with a photo of Sriram and what appeared to be food in a collage.
An X user, Jason, who is also an investor, re-shared it and lashed out at the creator for making ‘racist attacks’. “These racist attacks are disgusting. Sriram Krishnan is awesome, for the record.
Musk replied to Jason’s post with a “Hundred Points" emoji, a symbol often interpreted as expressing 100 percent agreement. Musk in an earlier occasion had said that those who have worked to contribute to this country have his respect.
“Anyone – of any race, creed or nationality – who came to America and worked like hell to contribute to this country will forever have my respect. America is the land of freedom and opportunity. Fight with every fiber of your being to keep it that way!," Musk said in a post on X.
In a separate incident, far-right activist Laura Loomer apologized on Sunday for publicly sharing Indian-American entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan’s personal information through Federal Election Commission (FEC) records.
Laura Loomer has criticized Sriram Krishnan’s appointment as Trump’s AI advisor, accusing him of seeking to remove green card caps and allowing foreign students to take US jobs.
In a post on X, Loomer claimed Krishnan donated to Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign and did not vote for Trump, questioning his loyalty.
