HomeMarket NewsEternal, Swiggy shares in focus as commercial cooking gas crisis threatens restaurant operations
India's food-service sector faces disruption due to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, risking restaurant shutdowns and impacting listed food-delivery platforms.
India’s food‑service sector is staring at a serious disruption as a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders raises the possibility of widespread restaurant shutdowns. Industry bodies warn that existing supplies may last only a week, creating an urgent situation that could directly affect food‑delivery platforms such as Zomato and Swiggy, which depend on thousands of restaurants operating uninterrupted.
Distributors across several regions are withholding commercial LPG deliveries, according to a CNBC-TV18 report. For instance, it has led to immediate disruptions, with Bengaluru witnessing a complete halt in commercial gas supply.
Hoteliers there have stated that many establishments may be forced to close temporarily because kitchens cannot operate without LPG. Such closures would sharply reduce order availability on food‑delivery apps, strain fulfilment capacity and limit menu choices for users.
For the December quarter, Eternal reported a net profit of ₹102 crore, which was in-line with the CNBC-TV18 poll of ₹102 crore. Revenue for the quarter was also aided by higher other income.
Revenue for the quarter increased to ₹16,315 crore, which was higher than the CNBC-TV18 poll of ₹15,500 crore. The topline growth was led by the Quick Commerce business.
Rival Swiggy Ltd reported a net loss for the December quarter on January 29 that was wider than the same period last year. Net loss for the quarter widened to ₹1,065 crore compared to a loss of ₹800 crore during the same quarter last year. Swiggy had reported a ₹1,092 crore net loss in the September quarter.
