Shy was charged the following day and appeared at Luton Crown Court via video link from Bedford on Friday wearing a grey prison-issue tracksuit. Shy, formerly an executive at Citi, served in senior roles at the US Treasury Department from 2008 to 2014, focusing on countering terrorism financing and advising on sanctions.

He also provided strategic analysis to US Department of Defense chiefs of staff and worked as a senior adviser to diplomat Richard Holbrooke.
