Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a set of controversial immigration bills aimed at supporting U.S. President Donald Trump's mass deportation efforts.

These bills provide the state with additional resources to crack down on illegal immigration. They were passed after DeSantis faced resistance from state Republican leadership, requiring a second special legislative session to push them through. The legislation establishes a state board for immigration enforcement and allows local resources to assist federal agencies in deportation efforts.

Governor DeSantis proclaimed that Florida is leading the nation with strict immigration measures, some surpassing Trump's executive orders.

“Today, the Florida Legislature has passed the strongest legislation to combat illegal immigration of any state in the entire country,” DeSantis said.

What does the Immigration Bill include?

The newly passed legislation introduces some of the strictest immigration policies in the U.S. The measure was widely praised by lawmakers who see it as a victory for President Trump. Additionally, it criminalizes the entry of any immigrant without legal status into Florida.

“Ultimately, this is a win for Donald Trump. Because that’s what this is all about,” Republican Sen. Joe Gruters said, as quoted by ABC News.

Previous versions of the bill sparked internal divisions among lawmakers. DeSantis had previously rejected initial drafts, calling them too weak. Republicans argue that Florida has become a ‘safe haven’ for immigrants lacking legal status.

Death penalty for Illegal Immigrants

A key provision in the new legislation allows for the death penalty for illegal immigrants who commit capital offenses in Florida, such as first-degree murder or child rape.

Democratic lawmakers have strongly opposed the bill, particularly its harsher penalties for undocumented individuals. State Rep. Kelly Skidmore criticized Republican lawmakers, saying they had violated their commitment to Floridians.

“You have broken a vow you made to the people of Florida and yourself,” Skidmore said, as quoted by NPR.

Almost $300 million allocated for immigration enforcement

Florida will allocate $298 million to strengthen law enforcement agencies, including hiring 50 new officers dedicated to immigration enforcement. Local agencies will receive new equipment and training, while officers assisting federal deportation efforts will be awarded bonuses. Additionally, detention facilities will receive state reimbursements.

The legislation also repeals a 2014 law that granted in-state tuition rates to undocumented students in Florida’s colleges and universities. The repeal will significantly increase education costs for undocumented students already enrolled.
