The United States administration has always maintained strict immigration policies. However, since the beginning of the Trump 2.0 presidency, there have been reports of forced detentions and inhumane treatment of several immigrants. In the latest development, a report published by Americans for Immigrant Justice, Human Rights Watch, and Sanctuary of the South has raised serious allegations against detention facilities operated by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in South Florida.
The report, titled “‘You Feel Like Your Life is Over’: Abusive Practices at Three Florida Immigration Detention Centers Since January 2025", outlines claim against the Trump administration regarding its treatment of immigrants. The 92-page document, released this week, highlights mistreatment at the Krome North Service Processing Center, Broward Transitional Center, and the Federal Detention Center in Miami.
Allegations include detainees being shackled and transported on buses for extended hours without food or water. Worse still, there were no functioning toilets, resulting in a terrible smell of faeces throughout the buses. Detainees were reportedly made to sleep on cold concrete floors, even in freezing temperatures. The overcrowded rooms were constantly lit with fluorescent lighting.
The mistreatment allegedly extended to denial of basic hygiene and medical care. This included no hospital access for individuals suffering from serious illnesses and pain. Lunch was reportedly served only at 7 pm, with detainees kept hungry throughout the day. One detainee was quoted as saying, “We had to eat like animals." Additionally, the report claims that women were forced to urinate in front of men due to the lack of private washrooms in one of the facilities.
Graver accusations include the alleged death of a detainee that was ignored by guards. “People in immigration detention are being treated as less than human," said Belkis Wille, the report’s author.
The claims made in the report have yet to be independently verified. The advocacy organisations, comprising an immigrant-rights law firm, a global human-rights watchdog, and a worker-led collective, compiled the report by reviewing several documents and interviewing 17 detainees, along with their family members and attorneys.
The Miami Herald reached out to the US Department of Homeland Security, ICE, and the Bureau of Prisons for comment, but no response was received.
