The NHTSA highlighted that some of the affected vehicles had previously been part of a recall regarding 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022-2023 Ford Maverick pickups.
Ford Motor Co. is recalling 272,827 of its popular Bronco and Maverick models due to a power issue that may cause the vehicles to suddenly stop or fail to start, potentially leaving drivers stranded.
Faulty 12V Battery to Blame
The Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that the issue stems from a 12-volt battery supplied by Camel Battery, a Chinese manufacturer. The batteries have internal defects, including weld failures that can lead to open circuits, putting the vehicles at risk.
No Reports of Accidents or Injuries
Thankfully, the NHTSA confirmed that no accidents, fires, or injuries have been linked to the defect. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between February 2021 and October 2023, when Ford ceased using these specific batteries.
Minimal Impact Expected, Affected Vehicles Estimated at 1%
Ford estimates that the faulty batteries only affect around 1% of the recalled vehicles.
Ford’s Commitment to Improve Recall Processes
In response to this issue, Ford has vowed to review and enhance its recall decision-making process. This follows the company’s commitment made in November to undergo independent third-party monitoring of its recall performance for three years, following a fine by the U.S. government for slow recall action in the past.
Software Updates to Address Power Loss and Battery Problems
The NHTSA also highlighted that some of the affected vehicles had previously been part of a recall regarding 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022-2023 Ford Maverick pickups. The issue involved vehicles losing power, including the inability to turn on hazard lights. The remedy includes software updates aimed at better detection of battery issues and providing early warnings to drivers.
