France is battling a second intense heatwave this year, with southern regions breaking all-time temperature records. Authorities have issued warnings about health risks and urged residents to take precautions.
Many parts of France and specifically Southern France experienced unprecedented heat on Monday, with temperature records shattered at multiple weather stations amid a fierce summer heatwave sweeping much of the country. Authorities urged residents to stay vigilant as the extreme weather posed risks to health and safety.
In Bordeaux, located in the southwest, temperatures soared to a blistering 41.6 degrees Celsius by around 4:00 pm local time (1400 GMT). This new high eclipsed the previous record of 41.2C set on July 23, 2019, marking a second wave of escalation in the region's heat patterns after the first wave of June.
The national weather service, Meteo France, reported all-time records also falling at stations in Bergerac, Cognac, and Saint-Girons. These locations, scattered across southern France, highlighted the widespread impact of the heatwave, which has gripped large parts of the nation and prompted widespread concern.
GOVERNMENT URGES CAUTION AMID EXTREME CONDITIONS
Government officials emphasised the need for caution, advising people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and young children. The heatwave arrives as Europe continues to grapple with increasingly frequent extreme weather events linked to climate change, though experts note that local factors can amplify such conditions.
As the week progresses, forecasters predict continued high temperatures until at least 15th August, with the potential for further records. Residents are encouraged to follow updates from Meteo France and adhere to safety guidelines to mitigate the heat's effects.
