In a dramatic escalation of Gaza’s deepening humanitarian crisis, thousands of desperate Palestinians stormed a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in central Gaza, seizing bags of flour and cartons of food. The WFP said that “hordes of hungry people" breached the Al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir al-Balah.

At least two people died and several others were injured during the chaos. Video footage, widely shared on social media, showed crowds looting supplies as gunfire rang out in the background.

The WFP said, “Humanitarian needs in Gaza have spiralled out of control. Gaza needs an immediate scale-up of food assistance. This is the only way to reassure people that they will not starve."

Israel Eases Aid Blockade

The incident comes just days after Israel eased a near three-month-long blockade, allowing limited aid deliveries. Israeli authorities said 121 UN and international aid trucks entered Gaza on Wednesday, carrying essentials like flour and other food items.

But UN officials say that’s far from enough as Sigrid Kaag, UN Middle East envoy said, “This is comparable to a lifeboat after the ship has sunk."

UN Calls For Increase In Aid For Gaza

Jonathan Whittall of the UN’s humanitarian office for the occupied Palestinian territories pushed back against allegations of Hamas diverting aid, stating that credible humanitarian channels have seen no such interference.

“The real theft of relief goods has been by criminal gangs operating with impunity near the Kerem Shalom crossing," Jonathan Whittall said, blaming Israeli forces for allowing them to function unchecked.

The UN has called for a major surge in aid, similar to the flow seen during the last ceasefire, warning that without sustained and coordinated delivery, incidents like the Deir al-Balah warehouse raid could become the norm.
