Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving time for sex crimes linked to Jeffrey Epstein, wants immunity from further prosecution before testifying before US lawmakers, according to a report by Bloomberg News.

In a letter sent to House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, Maxwell’s legal team said she won’t speak freely without a formal grant of immunity. “Ms Maxwell cannot risk further criminal exposure in a politically charged environment without formal immunity," her lawyer David Oscar Markus wrote.

Maxwell has been subpoenaed by the committee and is expected to be deposed on August 11. Her request now complicates ongoing efforts by lawmakers and US authorities to get answers about Epstein’s sex trafficking operation and the powerful figures who may have been connected to it, according to the report by Bloomberg News.

US Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche also held two closed-door meetings with Maxwell last week. The Justice Department has not commented on what was discussed.
