Shares of Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. surged over 13% on Wednesday, September 16, after the company received a patent from the Chinese Patent Office for its application titled “Use of Compounds for Treating Viral Infections”.
According to an exchange filing, the patent covers the use of compounds that inhibit V-ATPase activity in cells and their use in the manufacture of medicines for treating viral infections, the company said.

The Chinese patent certificate, attached to the filing, shows that the patent was granted on September 15, 2026. The patent number is ZL 2021 8 0048053.9, with publication number CN 115867276 B. The application was filed on May 10, 2021.
The patent is held by Godavari Biorefineries, with M. Atawar, S. Gawade, P. Kakkar and S. Srivastava listed as the inventors on the Chinese patent certificate.

In June 2026, the company said the Japan Patent Office had granted a patent for “5-Hydroxy-1,4-Naphthalenedione for Use in the Treatment of Cancer.” The patent, registered on May 26, 2026, covers a class of compounds that the company said showed inhibitory effects against cancer cells and cancer stem cells, including in breast and prostate cancer.
The Japanese patent application dates back to October 2021 and names Sandeep Gavade, Sangeeta Srivastava, Prashant Karkal and Maithili Athavale as inventors.
What does Godavari Biorefineries do?
Maharashtra-based Godavari Biorefineries manufactures bio-based chemicals, ethanol, sugar and power, with its products serving industries including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, flavours and fragrances, fuel, personal care and cosmetics.
Godavari Biorefineries made its stock market debut in October 2024, with the shares listing at ₹308, a 12.5% discount to the IPO price of ₹352 on the NSE, while it debuted at ₹310.55 on the BSE, an 11.7% discount.
The company's ₹555-crore IPO comprised a fresh issue of ₹325 crore and an offer-for-sale (OFS) of 65.27 lakh shares worth ₹230 crore at the upper end of the price band. The price band was set at ₹334-352 per share.
The issue was subscribed 1.83 times overall. The qualified institutional buyer portion was subscribed 2.76 times and the retail portion 1.71 times, while the non-institutional investor portion was subscribed 90%.
Shares of Godavari Biorefineries are trading off the initial spike but are holding on to gains of 9% at ₹246.74. The stock is still trading below its issue price.
