A special envoy to Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Canada may be next on US President Donald Trump’s “annexation" agenda as it seems the fate of Greenland is more or less decided.

Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, at the same time, also slammed the European Union for displaying its “double standards" in the matter. He said the group will continue doing what it does best: “monitoring the situation".

Greenland seems decided—the EU will continue doing what vassals do best: “monitoring the situation" and exemplifying double standards.Canada next? 🇨🇦 https://t.co/Dzm5yYBjD0— Kirill Dmitriev (@kadmitriev) January 6, 2026

“Greenland seems decided—the EU will continue doing what vassals do best: “monitoring the situation" and exemplifying double standards. Canada next?" Dmitriev said in a post on X.

In his post, Dmitriev shared an interview of US homeland security adviser Stephen Miller responding to the questions on Trump’s latest comments regarding Greenland. Miller told the CNN that the “real question" to examine is Denmark’s “right" to “assert control over" Greenland.

“The real question is: by what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? What is the basis of their territorial claim? What is their basis of having Greenland as a colony of Denmark? The US is the power of NATO," Miller said during the interview.

Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland has generated tension in the international community, with the move being described by Danish and European leaders as a potential cause for the fracturing of the NATO.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has explicitly said an American takeover of the territory would “amount to the end of NATO". She said if the United States is choosing to attack another NATO member militarily, “then everything stops" including the security provided since the World War II.

WHY IS TRUMP AFTER GREENLAND?

Greenland, which is a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, is considered a critical geopolitical asset due to its rich deposits of rare earth minerals essential for high-tech gadgets like mobile phones and batteries as well as it vital position for Arctic security and surveillance.

The US Department of Defence already operates the remote Pituffik Space Base in the region, which supports missile warning and space surveillance for both the US and NATO. Additionally, Greenland guards the GIUK Gap, where the alliance is monitoring Russian naval movements in the North Atlantic.

Trump has stressed that Denmark cannot sufficiently defend the territory against Russian and Chinese influence. He mocked Danish security efforts, saying they have only added “one more dog sled" to the arsenal, and claimed the region is “covered with Russian and Chinese ships".

In contrast, Danish officials and Greenland’s own government maintain that the island’s sovereignty belongs solely to its people, who will decide their own future. The situation is being further complicated by recent US military actions in Venezuela.

A “dead-of-night" operation by US forces in Caracas to capture leader Nicolás Maduro has fuelled global fears regarding potential American interventions in other sovereign territories. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen has urged calm, noting that while the situation is serious, Greenland cannot be compared to Venezuela and the US cannot “simply conquer" the island.

The international response is sharp, with leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK joining Denmark to defend Greenland’s sovereignty. As the 20-day timeline mentioned by the US President is deepening fears of an intervention, Danish authorities are acknowledging that the rhetoric has escalated to a point where the possibility of a takeover must be taken seriously.
