Guyana minister Vikash Ramkisoon responded in fluent Hindi during the country’s Budget 2026 parliamentary debate after an opposition member questioned his knowledge of the language. When challenged about his command of Hindi, the minister switched to Hindi telling the Assembly, “Respected sir, whoever thinks I cannot speak in Hindi, I will debate them in Hindi."

The High Commission of India in Georgetown shared the moment on social media, posting: “गयाना की संसद में गूंजी हमारी हिंदी" (Our Hindi echoed in Guyana’s Parliament). The mission noted that the newly elected MP and Minister of State for Agriculture gave a “befitting reply" to the opposition member’s comment.

Hon’ble Vikash Ramkisoon, MP, spoke in chaste Hindi… pic.twitter.com/cFU1h5Bibd

The exchange drew attention to the enduring linguistic heritage of the Indo-Guyanese community in Guyana’s Parliament, where descendants of Indian indentured laborers continue to preserve their ancestral language more than a century after their forebears arrived on the South American nation’s shores.

Indo-Guyanese make up approximately 40% of Guyana’s population, descended from nearly 239,000 Indian laborers who arrived between 1838 and 1917, primarily from regions in present-day Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. While English serves as Guyana’s official language, Hindi and Bhojpuri have been maintained through generations via religious institutions, cultural organizations and family traditions.
