A footage showed the dramatic moment when German police confronted the suspect behind the fatal car attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg on Friday, which killed at least two people and injured many others.
German police arrested a Saudi Arabian man after he drove his dark BMW into a crowded festive market, leaving numerous victims injured and sprawled on the ground.
Authorities reported that one of the two victims killed was a young child. They further described the incident as a deliberate “attack" by the suspect and stated that an investigation was underway to determine the motive behind the act.
A video recorded by a bystander captured the suspect’s arrest on a walkway in the middle of the road. A police officer was seen pointing a handgun at the man and shouting instructions for him to lie down on the ground with his hands behind his back and head down.
The police said that the vehicle drove “at least 400 metres across the Christmas market" leaving behind a trail of bloodied casualties at the city’s central town hall square.
Visuals from the scene showed ambulances and fire engines rushing to the chaotic site, which was doused in blue emergency lights with sirens wailing.
Who Is The Suspect Behind Car Attack?
The interior minister for the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Tamara Zieschang, said that the suspect is a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia who moved to Germany around two decades back, in 2006. He has been practising medicine in Bernburg, about 40 kilometres south of Magdeburg.
“As things stand, he is a lone perpetrator, so that as far as we know there is no further danger to the city," said Haseloff, adding, “Every human life that has fallen victim to this attack is a tragedy and one human life too many."
“It is a catastrophe for the city of Magdeburg, for the state and for Germany in general," Haseloff added. He also noted that the death toll could rise given the severity of some of the injuries.
The violence took place in Magdeburg, a city with around 240,000 people west of Berlin and the capital of Saxony-Anhalt. It comes eight years after an Islamic extremist drove a truck into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing 13 people and injuring many others. The attacker was killed days later in a shootout in Italy.
