In a foreboding video clip released on X, Gabbard warned of a “nuclear holocaust” and blamed certain leaders for bringing the world closer to a nuclear war.

US Director of Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has warned the world is closer than ever to “nuclear annihilation" in a stark three-minute video shared on social media this week.
The video shows Gabbard walking through Hiroshima, Japan, where she recently travelled to learn about the aftermath of the 1945 US atomic bombing. Archival footage from the nuclear attack, including images of victims, is interspersed with Gabbard’s direct-to-camera remarks.
She blamed “political elite warmongers" for escalating tensions between nuclear powers and claims many of them feel immune from the consequences. “They believe they’ll be safe in nuclear shelters," she says.
She then calls on the public to act: “It’s up to us, the people, to speak up and demand an end to this madness. We must reject this path to nuclear war and work toward a world where no one has to live in fear of a nuclear holocaust."
I recently visited Hiroshima, and stood at the epicenter of a city scarred by the unimaginable horror caused by a single nuclear bomb dropped in 1945. What I saw, the stories I heard, and the haunting sadness that remains, will stay with me forever. pic.twitter.com/TmxmxiGwnV— Tulsi Gabbard 🌺 (@TulsiGabbard) June 10, 2025
It remains unclear when the video was recorded. Gabbard’s office has not clarified whether it was made using government resources. She visited Japan last week and toured a US military base with Ambassador George Glass. Her earlier trip to Japan in March did not include a stop in Hiroshima.
Gabbard’s remarks come amid heightened nuclear tensions. The Trump administration is currently in talks with Iran over a nuclear deal, though US President Donald Trump said this week that Tehran had rejected a US proposal to limit uranium enrichment.
The former Democratic congresswoman and 2020 presidential hopeful has long criticized foreign interventions and warned about the threat of nuclear conflict. Her comments this week echo earlier warnings. In 2019, during her campaign launch, she said the world was “on the precipice of nuclear war." She later supported Trump’s candidacy and switched parties in 2023.
In a post last year, she said: “The warmongers are trying to drag us into WW3, which can only end in one way: nuclear annihilation and the suffering and death of all our loved ones. Zelensky, Biden, NATO, congressional and media neocons are insane. And we are insane if we passively allow them to lead us into this holocaust like sheep to the slaughter."
