India on Thursday said it was ready to extend "any help in any manner" to help end the Ukraine-Russia war, while Nepal continued to deal with the fallout of devastating flash floods that have killed 1,259 people and left more than 5,000 missing.
In other developments, India’s envoy in Nepal said Indian and Nepali tunnel rescue teams would continue work "undeterred" despite tough conditions, the Indian Overseas Congress-USA condemned an FIR against Rahul Gandhi as "deeply troubling", Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India’s 7.8 per cent growth was remarkable despite global disruptions, and a Chinese official warned of more glacier collapses on the Tibetan Plateau.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made the offer during wide-ranging talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv. He said India was ready to extend "any help in any manner" to end the Ukraine-Russia war, which is now in its fifth year.
In Nepal, the death toll from flash floods rose to 1,259 on Thursday. More than 5,000 people remained missing, and families performed symbolic funeral rites for relatives after receiving no information about them for days.
Also in Nepal, Indian envoy Naveen Srivastava visited Syabrubesi, the base of the Indian tunnel rescue team. He said that even though the conditions were tough, both Indian and Nepali teams would continue their work "undeterred".
In the United States, the Indian Overseas Congress-USA strongly condemned the registration of an FIR against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his remarks concerning a religious ritual. It described the action as "deeply troubling".
Addressing an investors meet in New York, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India recorded a "remarkable growth" of 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27 despite global disruptions. She said India, against all odds, remained the fastest-growing major economy in the world.
In Beijing, a senior Chinese climate official warned that glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau were likely to become more unstable. The official said this could lead to more collapses and collateral disasters similar to last week’s deadly flash flood at the Tibet-Nepal border.
Thursday’s developments included India’s offer to help end the Ukraine-Russia war, Nepal’s worsening flood toll and continuing rescue efforts, political reactions in the US over an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, Sitharaman’s remarks on India’s growth, and China’s warning over future glacier-related disasters.
