Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla has been training with NASA and Axiom Space.

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three others will fly to the Space Station (ISS) on May 29 from Florida. The astronauts are part of Axiom Mission 4, the fourth private astronaut mission to the ISS.

Shukla has been training with NASA and the private space company Axiom Space for the past eight months. He will be India’s second national astronaut to go to space since 1984.

Besides Shukla, American astronaut Peggy Whitson, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland, and Tibor Kapu, a mechanical engineer from Hungary are part of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4).

Who Is Shubhanshu Shukla?

Born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shukla is fluent in both English and Hindi. His career took off when he joined the IAF fighter wing in June 2006. As a combat leader and experienced test pilot, he has accumulated an impressive 2,000 hours of flight time on various aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32.

In 2019, Shukla received a significant call from ISRO and began rigorous training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Moscow, Russia. This year-long preparation set the stage for his future. On February 27, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Shukla as one of the select astronauts undergoing extensive training for India’s first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan, set to launch in 2025.
