Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has levelled serious charges against India, explicitly blaming New Delhi for the failure of its ceasefire talks with Afghanistan in Istanbul.

Khawaja Asif said India is actively attempting to sabotage the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime.

Asif claimed that India is waging a “proxy war via Afghanistan with Pakistan". The accusations are rooted in Islamabad’s belief that New Delhi is deeply involved in Kabul’s internal affairs, using its position to finance opposition groups.

He said Islamabad harbours “no doubts" that India is “financing proxies against Pakistan through Kabul". He accused New Delhi of “penetrating Kabul’s affairs".

The Pakistani minister’s allegations of India’s interference came with pointed criticism of some members of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. He referenced Afghan foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to India, suggesting that certain Taliban leaders are “playing dirty on India’s behest".

The failure of the ceasefire talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which took place amid ongoing border tensions, seems to be rooted in a fundamental lack of trust from the Pakistani side toward the current administration in Kabul.

Asif further made it clear that Pakistan “can’t trust the Afghan Taliban regime anymore". This deep-seated distrust is the reason Islamabad is now “demanding written guarantees" from the Afghan side.

Arguing why guarantees are essential, he said there is “no unified government in Kabul" and characterised the Afghan Taliban regime as merely a “cult of some people". The breakdown of the Istanbul talks, he added, is a result of direct Indian interference and sabotage, coupled with Pakistan’s inability to rely on the Afghan Taliban regime without formal and written commitments due to its perceived internal divisions.
