The suspect in the murder of an Indian-origin woman, who was found dead in Canada's Toronto in December last year, has finally been arrested. The accused has been identified as 32-year-old Abdul Ghafoori.
He had been on the run ever since 30-year-old Himanshi Khurana's body was recovered inside a house in Toronto on December 20 (local time). Following the murder, the police had said the case appeared to be an act of "intimate partner violence."
The investigators had also identified Ghafoori as the suspect and a countrywide arrest warrant was issued against him for first-degree murder. The charge carries a life sentence without parole if premeditation and intent are proven in court.
Ghafoori's arrest, which came about seven months after Khurana's body was found, was announced by the Toronto Police in a news release on Saturday, August 8. The announcement indicated that the accused was extradited from an unspecified foreign country.
According to Toronto Police, members of its Fugitive Squad and Homicide and Missing Persons Unit coordinated with national and international agencies to facilitate Ghafoori's return to Canada. They said he was located and arrested on August 7.
He was reportedly taken into custody by Canadian officials at an airport in Toronto.

Khurana's body was recovered after officers arrived in a Toronto neighbourhood while responding to a missing person complaint. Following an overnight investigation, her body was found inside a house.
The death was deemed a homicide following a preliminary probe. The investigators later zeroed in on Ghafoori, the victim's purported partner, as the suspect.
