A 26-year-old woman from Punjab was shot dead in Toronto, Canada. Police have arrested the accused, also from Punjab, who is facing two charges, including first-degree murder.
The victim, identified as Navneet Kaur, was killed on July 24, becoming the city's 22nd homicide victim of 2026, according to the Toronto Police Service.
Police said officers responded to reports of a shooting at around 7.23 am. Responding officers found Kaur suffering from a gunshot injury. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, she was pronounced dead.
According to a police statement, Kaur and the suspect, Sharnjeet Singh, had a "brief interaction" before he opened fire and fled the scene.
Police launched a large-scale manhunt, deploying drones, K9 units and other resources. Following further investigation, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police located and arrested the suspect, CBC Canada reported.
A Brampton resident, 37-year-old Singh, has been charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking.
The police are trying to ascertain a motive for the shooting.
