Israeli MP Shelly Tal Merson on Tuesday said that Israel holds no animosity towards the Iranian people and added that the real issue is with the “fanatic regime of fundamentalist Islamic groups."
In an interview with CNN-News18, Merson reflected on the past, saying Israel and Iran once enjoyed “amazing relations" before the Islamic revolution altered the political landscape.
“We do not have any issues with the Iranians. You know 40 years ago we had amazing relations with Iran. It’s just because of this regime which is a fanatic regime of fundamentalistic Islamic groups that is controlling the people of Iran and holding the minorities," the Israeli MP said.
Merson also accused the current Iranian leadership of fuelling tensions in the region and of mistreating ethnic and religious minorities within the country. “You know they’re doing horrific things to minorities in Iran and so basically Iran is the one who started this war with Israel decades ago."
She added that Israel does not seek war with Iran: “We have nothing against them. We do not wish to have a war with Iran."
Merson also accused Tehran of not honouring the ceasefire, saying it was violated shortly after it came into effect.
