Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel has accepted a new ceasefire proposal presented by US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff. Netanyahu made the announcement while speaking to families of hostages held in Gaza, Israeli media reported.

Earlier, the Palestinian militant group Hamas said it had “received Witkoff’s new proposal from the mediators and is currently studying it responsibly."

“The leadership of the Hamas movement has received Witkoff’s new proposal from the mediators and is currently studying it responsibly, in a manner that serves the interests of our people, provides relief, and achieves a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip," the Palestinian militant group said in a statement.

Negotiations to end 18 months of devastating war have yet to produce a breakthrough since Israel resumed military operations in Gaza in March, following a brief truce. The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, despite aid beginning to trickle back into the area after more than two months of blockade by Israel.

Food security experts warn that one in five people face the threat of starvation.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military has recently intensified its offensive in Gaza in what it describes as a renewed effort to destroy Hamas, whose attack on 7 October 2023 triggered the war.
