The world-famous Iron Dome of Israel is going to get an upgrade with a 100KW Iron Beam system. This is an upgrade of its existing Lite Beam system to intercept and kill threats. The new system will be integrated by December 2025.

Developed by Rafael, the Iron Beam can intercept threats at a 10km range and can effectively neutralise them using a laser beam. The two telescopes in the system are used for the task and to assess the effectiveness. It can neutralise missiles, rockets, and drones too.

“We had been working on this system for the last 20 years. Iron Dome is already equipped with multiple sub-systems but this one is going to add a lot of capabilities. We have done the field trials and it is a successful system," said a representative from Rafael.

The existing systems of Iron Dome are 50KW and 10KW with a maximum range of 5KM.

Iron Beam can also be used as a standalone system. The representatives from the country say that for countries like India, this “can be integrated with the existing air defence systems".

Iron Dome has long proven its worth by knocking down incoming rockets with remarkable precision, often in the tens of seconds that decide life and death. With a high-energy laser joining its layers, Israel isn’t just adding another interceptor; it is tightening a defence net that has shaped modern air-shielding.

This is also to note that India is also working on Mission Sudarshan Chakra that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Red Fort. While agencies like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have already tested Direct Energy Weapons, all these systems will be integrated into the future defences of the country.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra is an Indian defence initiative to create a comprehensive, multi-layered national security shield by 2035. This shield will integrate surveillance, cyber defence, and air defence systems to protect India’s critical, civilian, and strategic assets from threats like missiles, drones, and cyber-attacks. The project is being developed indigenously by the DRDO and will be expanded over the next decade.
