BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut on Tuesday criticised comedian Kunal Kamra’s jokes about Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, asserting that it is inappropriate to disrespect someone for their humble beginnings. Ranaut, who faced bulldozer action during Uddhav Thackeray’s regime, deemed the move against her “illegal" but stated that the action against Kamra is “legal."

Ranaut’s comments come amid the ongoing controversy over Shiv Sena workers vandalising a Mumbai studio in protest against Kamra’s parody of Shinde, the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister. The vandalism was followed by the demolition of the Khar studio, with civic officials citing building law violations.

Ranaut, while speaking to the media, emphasised that she does not want to link her past experiences with the current situation. “That was illegal; this is illegal. Insulting someone, especially a person who values respect and has worked hard to rise from humble beginnings, is wrong," she said.

Slamming Kamra, Kangana Ranaut questioned his credentials and condemned the use of abusive language in comedy, mocking religious texts, and making jokes about family members for fleeting fame. “Where is our society headed?" she asked.

Ranaut supported Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s statement that individuals must take responsibility for their words and actions. “Do not connect that episode with this. That was illegal, this action is legal," she reiterated.

Recalling her 2020 experience, the actor took to X and wrote, “They called me names like haramkhor, threatened me, served a notice late in the night to my watchman and next morning before courts could open bulldozers demolished the entire house. High court called the demolition completely illegal."

“They laughed at it and raised a toast to my pain and public humiliation. It seems your insecurity and mediocrity has not only made you bitter and stupid but it had blinded you as well, it’s not some third class series or atrocious films that you make, don’t try to sell your dumb lies and agendas here in the matters related to my ordeals, stay out of it," she added.

Kangana Ranaut On Demolition In 2020

In September 2020, when Uddhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister, a part of Ranaut’s Mumbai office in Pali Hill was demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for alleged encroachment.

The demolition led to a dispute between Ranaut and Shiv Sena leaders after actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. She had compared Mumbai to Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, criticising the city’s law and order.

Ranaut took the matter to court and won a significant victory when the Bombay High Court halted the demolition and questioned the BMC’s motives.

As the debate over the actions against Kunal Kamra continues, with the Opposition supporting the comedian, some have cited Ranaut’s case, accusing the Uddhav Thackeray-led party of hypocrisy in its current stance.
