JD Vance India Visit: US Vice President JD Vance will embark on a week long two nation visit to India and Italy from April 18, the White House said on Wednesday.

Vance will be accompanied by his wife Usha Vance, and will hold meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian officials and would discuss shared economic and geopolitical priorities with the leaders. The US Vice President will also travel to Jaipur and Agra during his visit and participate in engagements at cultural sites, the White House statement said.

This would be Usha Vance’s first visit to her home country as the Second Lady of the United States. She traces her roots to Andhra Pradesh and comes with a full bag of credentials and a touch of Indian culture in the American political system.

During his visit to Italy, Vance would hold talks with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Vice President will also meet with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

JD Vance’s visit comes as New Delhi and Washington are looking to sign the first tranche of a bilateral trade deal that was announced during PM Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in February this year.

This came as Donald Trump imposed 27% reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods on April 2, but announced a 90-day pause on tariffs on all countries with the exception of China. As per the sources, while it is difficult for the agreement to be signed within this period, its form and structure may be decided in 90 days.
