An Italian man who lived on a deserted island for 32 years until he was forcibly evicted in 2021 has died at the age of 85.

Mauro Morandi, who had been dubbed Italian ‘Robinson Crusoe’ by the media, lived alone on the island of Budelli near Sardinia (an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea), in an old shelter dating back to World War II.

In 1989, Morandi set out for Polynesia to escape consumerism and society. During his journey, he reached the island, and coincidentally, the island’s caretaker was close to retirement, so Morandi took over the role.

Morandi kept the island clean for 32 years and worked to raise awareness among tourists about the environment. He was removed from the island by Italian authorities in 2021 when it was designated a nature park. Following this, he began a new life in a small apartment in La Maddalena, Sardinia.

He only reconnected with the outside world three years ago. Prior to this, he spent three decades living alone on the beautiful island in a house made of coral, granite, and shells.

As caretaker, he had food and drink delivered to him. He powered his house using a temporary solar energy system and kept it warm with a simple fireplace. When he was ordered to leave, he had no home, but the government relocated him to La Maddalena, an archipelago in Sardinia, which had been designated as a national park.

According to a CNN report, after leaving the island in 2021, Morandi said: “It never ended. I am a living example that a new life is possible. You can always start everything again, even if you are over 80. There are always more things to experience. I am happy with this new life and have regained the joy of living and the comforts of everyday life."
