The previously classified documents related to the 1963 assassination of former President John F Kennedy have found the mention of Gary Underhill, who worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). His death continues to remain a mystery.

According to the document, Underhill was found dead days after he had alleged that the CIA was responsible for Kennedy’s assassination.

Soon after the assassination of Kennedy, Underhill had left Washington and had sought refuge at a friend’s home in New Jersey.

“The day after the assassination, Gary Underhill left Washington in a hurry. Late in the evening, he showed up at the home of friends in New Jersey. He was very agitated," the document mentioned.

“A small clique within the CIA was responsible for the assassination, he confided, and he was afraid for his life and probably would have to leave the country," it stated.

“Less than six months later Underhill was found shot to death in his Washington apartment. The coroner ruled it suicide," it read.

The document also revealed what Underhill’s friend told the authorities after his death. “He was sober but badly shook".

“He attributed the Kennedy murder to a CIA clique," his friend had said.

WHO WAS GARY UNDERHILL?

According to the document, Underhill has been an intelligence agent during World War II and was a recognised authority on limited warfare and small arms.

A researcher and writer on military affairs, he was on a first-name basis with many of the top brass in the Pentagon. He was also on intimate terms with a number of high-ranking CIA officials, as per one of the documents.

Underhill was found dead on May 8, 1964.

Kennedy was killed on November 22, 1963, on a visit to Dallas. As his motorcade was finishing its parade route downtown, shots rang out from the Texas School Book Depository building.

Police arrested 24-year-old Lee Harvey Oswald, who had positioned himself from a sniper’s perch on the sixth floor. Two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer.

A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, which President Lyndon B Johnson established to investigate, concluded that Oswald acted alone and that there was no evidence of a conspiracy. However, that didn’t quell a web of alternative theories over the decades.
