Ever since Sheikh's arrest, BJP has been alleging that the TMC government in West Bengal was "shielding" the suspended party leader

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan, the prime accused in the case related to the attack on ED officials in Sandheshkhali, was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the state police on the orders of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday.

Shahjahan Sheikh, who is known for his strong local support, appeared noticeably different under the custody of the CBI compared to his previous court appearance under the Bengal Police.

The accused’s body language exhibited signs of tension, submissiveness, and secrecy during his recent appearance in the court under CBI custody. This change in demeanour highlights the impact of different custodial situations on Sheikh’s behaviour especially amid allegations that West Bengal was “shielding” the suspended party leader.

Sheikh, who was arrested by Bengal police on February 29, looked confident, assured and invincible when presented in the court with Bengal police while the footage of him being produced in the court under CBI exhibits complete fear. The video shows officials holding him sternly like a criminal.

Ever since Sheikh’s arrest, BJP has been alleging that the TMC government in West Bengal was “shielding” the suspended party leader who is accused of sexual abuse, land-grabbing in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali and attacking an ED team, is in the custody of CBI.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “On one hand, the prime minister is sending out a message of ‘Beti bachao, beti padhao’, on the other hand, Mamata didi is sending out the message of ‘Shajahan bachao’ from West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali.”

Meanwhile, a court in West Bengal’s Basirhat on Sunday extended the CBI custody of Shajahan Sheikh by another four days on a prayer by the central agency.
