The Karnataka cabinet on Wednesday decided to rename state-run Bangalore City University after former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
R Ashoka, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly, objected to the move, saying that the Congress party hates Bengaluru.
“Congress hates Bangalore. That’s why they are renaming Bangalore University as Manmohan Singh University," he said.
Manmohan Singh, who played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s economic reforms during his 10-year tenure as the prime minister, passed away at the age of 92 in December last year.
During his budget speech, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that Bangalore City University will be renamed Dr Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University.
