The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday witnessed a massive uproar after Union Minister JP Nadda said that Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge has lost his “mental balance."
Speaking in the Upper House in Parliament during a special debate on Operation Sindoor, Nadda accused 83-year-old Kharge of using controversial words for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“He (RS LoP Mallikarjun Kharge) is a very senior leader but the way in which he had commented on the PM…I can understand his pain. He (PM Modi) has been there since 11 years now. He happens to be the most popular leader of the world… But you have so much in love with your party that you are in so much pain having losing your mental balance use those words," the Leader of House in Rajya Sabha said.
However, Nadda apologised to Congress president Kharge after uproar by opposition MPs and withdrew his remark.
“We respect the LoP. I withdrew my words. I apologise if you are hurt. But you, too, were led astray by emotions. You went so astray that you could not be mindful of even the dignity of the PM, that is sad," he said.
After Nadda’s remark, Kharge said, “There are a few leaders in this House I have immense respect for. Nadda ji is one of them. Rajnath ji and he are ministers who speak without losing their balance. He is telling me today. This is a matter of shame. He should apologise, I am not going to leave this alone."
Citing terrorist attacks in Uri, Pathankot, Pulwama and Pahalgam, the Leader of Opposition alleged that the failure of intelligence agencies and asked Home Minister Amit Shah to take the responsibility for the April 22 attack, in which 26 people were killed.
“Uri and Pathankot terrorist attacks in 2016, Pulwama in 2019 and now Pahalgam in 2025. All these incidents make it clear that there is a recurring Intelligence failure and failure in national security…I would like to ask the HM, who is responsible for this? What did you do to rectify the mistake?…I would like to ask the HM, that who is responsible for this? Vacate your post if you are. If no, what action is the PM taking?" he asked.
“On 14th July 2025, J&K LG Manoj Sinha admitted that the Pahalgam terror attack was undoubtedly a security failure…"I take full responsibility for the incident which was undoubtedly a security lapse". The Home Minister should take responsibility, not the Lt Governor," he added.
