A bitter trade war between the US and China, which escalated as both countries imposed sky-high tariffs on each other, has rocked the global economy. Amid the conflict, a startling revelation made by the Chinese media has sent shockwaves across the American market and buyers.
The ongoing trade war has led China to expose secrets held by major global luxury brands and US President Donald Trump. A Chinese news outlet recently revealed that several luxury brands manufacture their products in China at low costs but sell them at highly inflated prices. China 24 outlet claimed that a Chinese factory has been producing merchandise for Trump’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) campaign since 2016.
Despite Trump’s repeated calls for American companies to manufacture within the US, and his imposition of high tariffs on Chinese goods, this revelation has sparked outrage on social media. The Chinese news outlet pointed out the “paradox" in China-US relations, highlighting that while Trump urged voters to “buy American and hire American," his campaign products were being made in China for as little as $1 each.
A user commented, “Trump’s MAGA gear being made in China since 2016 is peak hypocrisy. His “America First" slogan falls flat when his own merch undercuts US workers. Tariffs won’t fix this, maybe he should start by making his stuff here instead of overseas." Another wrote, “Trump says buy American, but he buys from China."
However, others were not shocked at the revelation and even defended Trump’s tariff approach. “Oh no! Can you believe the Chinese would take advantage of probably the best merch pusher in the world to make money?" a user said. Another individual called for tariffs to be increased to 400%.
Many praised China for its response to Trump’s policies, while some Chinese suppliers took to social media to reveal that they also manufacture products for luxury brands like Birkin, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Estee Lauder, and Bobbi Brown. These suppliers are now offering to sell directly to consumers at a fraction of the retail price.
Viral videos from these suppliers show the high-quality materials and skilled labor used in production. They break down costs and offer to sell items without the branded logos, sometimes covering import duties and providing free shipping. These revelations have intensified the debate on social media, questioning if the US can indeed win the trade war against China.
Trump has increased the levies imposed on China to 145%, while Beijing has set a retaliatory 125% toll on American imports. Chinese President Xi Jinping said the US sanctions and tariffs would not shake the determination of Beijing and that “victory must belong to the great Chinese people".
