A strong magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck on Saturday in a sparsely populated region near the border between Alaska and the Canadian territory of Yukon, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake occurred about 230 miles (370 km) northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and roughly 90 km north of Yakutat, a town of about 660 residents. It was also felt in Whitehorse, Yukon, prompting a couple of emergency calls to police there.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Calista MacLeod said many residents reported the tremor on social media, but officials have not received any reports of injuries or structural damage.

The quake hit at a depth of around 6 miles (10 km) and triggered several smaller aftershocks. Despite the strong shaking, both the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the Weather Service confirmed that the event posed no tsunami threat to the West Coast or nearby coastal communities.
