Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s dual rhetoric of defiance and dialogue against India in his country’s Parliament masks a deepening internal crisis, top Indian intelligence sources said on Monday.
In an address to a joint session of the Pakistani Parliament, President Zardari issued a series of provocative statements with military warnings directed at India, but also called for a return to the negotiating table over the Kashmir issue.
Zardari’s speech, meanwhile, was met with swift dismissal by Indian intelligence agencies that said it is nothing more than aggressive posturing and diplomatic overtures. They said it is a calculated piece of “political theatre" designed to mask Pakistan’s crumbling domestic stability.
During the session, Zardari adopted a stern tone explicitly cautioning India against any potential “miscalculation" about Pakistan’s military preparedness.
“Make no mistake, we are ready for you," Zardari said, adding that any renewed aggression against Pakistan will be met with a “firm reply".
But he immediately tempered this “warmongering" stance with stress on regional security through diplomacy. “My message to them is to move away from war theatres to meaningful negotiating tables because that is the only path for regional security," he said.
But, in the same sentence, he raised the tempo again while expressing Pakistan’s commitment to the “just cause" of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said India must “listen to us attentively", vowing that his country will continue to provide its “fullest diplomatic and moral support" to the J&K.
WHAT DID INDIAN INTELLIGENCE SAY?
According to top Indian intelligence sources, Zardari’s address was simply “defensive posturing" aimed at diverting attention from the crises engulfing Pakistan, especially amid a full-blown conflict with neighbouring Afghanistan.
The intelligence sources told News18 that Zardari’s rhetoric is a deliberate attempt to use nationalist sentiment and the “Kashmir obsession" to consolidate domestic authority amid severe economic stress and widening political rifts.
They said Pakistan is currently grappling with operations against groups such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), while the armed forces face internal accusations of acting against fellow Muslims. In this context, his speech is viewed not as a genuine signal of impending war but as a strategy for domestic and international gains.
