The Donald Trump administration laid off over 20,000 federal employees across multiple agencies- implementing one of the largest government workforce reductions in recent history. The firings are aimed at reducing government spending- hitting major US agencies including the IRS, USAID, FEMA, and the EPA whose operations are likely to be majorly affected.

A memo to the heads of these agencies noted that the federal government is “costly, inefficient, and deeply in debt."

“At the same time, it is not producing results for the American public. Instead, tax dollars are being siphoned off to fund unproductive and unnecessary programs that benefit radical interest groups while hurting hardworking American citizens," it said.

Which US Agencies Are Affected By Mass Layoffs

The mass layoffs impacted federal employees across various sectors. The largest job cuts have been witnessed in the following agencies:

Internal Revenue Service (IRS): Approximately 7,000 workers at the IRS have been laid off. As per The Washington Post, more than 110 IRS offices are set to lose their jobs.

United States Agency for Development (USAID): Around 5,600 employees at USAID have been asked to vacate their offices which could put the agency into a near shutdown and likely freeze international aid programs.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): Up to 65% of EPA staff has been let go by the Trump administration. The cuts are expected to severely impact the agency’s ability to enforce environmental protection standards.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA): Over 240 TSA employees were laid off due to performance and conduct issues during their probationary period, TSA spokesperson Robert Langston told Bloomberg.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): Donald Trump directed FEMA to identify employees involved in “climate, environmental justice, equity and DEIA initiatives" for potential layoffs.
