A medieval tower in Rome, near the Roman Forum ruins, partially collapsed on Monday during renovations, injuring one worker and trapping another.
According to a report by Associated Press, hundreds of tourists watched as firefighters used a mobile ladder to bring a stretcher to the upper level of the Torre dei Conti to rescue the worker who remained trapped.
While rescuing the workers, another part of the structure partially collapsed.
Firefighter spokesman Luca Cari said one worker remained trapped hours after the first collapse.
AP reported that four firefighters later approached the first-floor window on two mobile ladders, but were quickly pulled back when dust emerged.
The authorities then took the help of a drone to check the condition of the trapped worker.
“At the moment, there is a person trapped but we have evidence that he is still alive," the Rome prefect, Lamberto Giannini, told reporters.
“Every effort is under way to try to save him, which is a priority, but what we can say is that it will be a very long and complex operation, because the risk of collapse is extremely high. We will try in every way because the absolute priority is to save this human life."
AP reported that Queen Paglinawan was working in a nearby gelato parlor when she heard the two loud noises from the town in quick succession.
“I was working and then I heard some like falling, and then I saw the tower collapse in a diagonal way," Paglinawan said.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri reached the spot as local police from the I Centro Group closed pedestrian and vehicular traffic along Via dei Fori Imperiali to facilitate emergency response.
According to Euro News, the most seriously injured worker, aged 64, was transported to San Giovanni Hospital in critical condition with a head injury.
The Torre dei Conti was built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III as a residence for his family. The tower was damaged in a 1349 earthquake and suffered subsequent collapses in the 17th century.
