Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday delivered a sharp and sarcastic retort to US President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. She quipped that North America could instead be renamed “Mexican America,” referencing an early historical map of the region.
"Mexican America, that sounds nice," Sheinbaum joked, also pointing out that the Gulf of Mexico had been named that way since 1607 while pointing to a map displayed at the press conference.
On Thursday, Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico, the water body stretching from Florida to Mexico's Cancun, where he also outlined a sweeping expansionist agenda, suggesting the possibility of taking control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.

“We are going to call it América Mexicana. It sounds pretty, no?”

Sheinbaum also refuted Trump's claim that Mexico is "run by the cartels," stating, "In Mexico, the people are in charge," and emphasised that "we are addressing the security problem".
However, the Mexican president expressed confidence in a positive future relationship between the two countries, as Donald Trump is set to take over the US administration on January 20.
"I believe there will be a good relationship," she said, acknowledging, "President Trump has his own way of communicating".
On Trump's pitch to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Mexican imports, Sheinbaum warned that if the new US administration imposes tariffs on Mexico, her administration would respond with similar measures. She stressed that any sort of tax was “not acceptable and would cause inflation and job losses for the United States and Mexico”.
