Mitch McConnell, a US senator from Kentucky, was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning, a spokesperson said in a statement.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” the statement read.
A representative for McConnell did not respond to the Guardian’s questions on his current condition or what prompted the latest hospital visit.
In recent years, McConnell has publicly struggled with his health, raising questions on whether he will finish out his current Senate term, set to end in January 2027.
McConnell was hospitalized for eight days in February after experiencing “flu-like symptoms”. The 84-year-old senator has also frozen up and become unresponsive during several press engagements in recent years.
Since 2023, McConnell has also fallen several times, sources reported. That year, McConnell sustained a concussion and broken ribs following a fall at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington DC McConnell used a wheelchair after the injury, which a spokesperson said was “purely as a precautionary measure”.
McConnell reportedly tripped and fell at least two more times in 2023. The Kentucky senator took a tumble while on an international trip to meet with then Finnish president Sauli Niinistö.
McConnell also fell while getting off a plane in DC, a source told CNN at the time of the incident.
