US President Donald Trump has informed his Cabinet members and close associates that billionaire ally Elon Musk will soon step back from his government role, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing three individuals familiar with the matter.

According to Politico, the President remains pleased with Musk and his DOGE initiative but both men have decided in recent days that it will soon be time for Musk to return to his businesses and take on a supporting role.

Trump has appointed the Tesla and SpaceX CEO as a special government employee to lead efforts to cut government funding and dismantle various US agencies.

However, representatives for the White House and the Musk-led task force could not be immediately reached to confirm the report.
