Myanmar Earthquake: The death toll from the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has risen to 1,644, with over 3,400 people injured and many still missing, the country’s ruling junta said on Saturday, according to AFP.

Six deaths have also been confirmed in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, where an under-construction high-rise building collapsed, trapping dozens of workers. As many as 47 are still missing, reports claimed.

Rescuers in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city and the epicentre of the earthquake, are conducting rescue operations at full scale. However, many quake-hit areas remain inaccessible due to damaged roads and bridges.

They pulled a woman alive from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building 30 hours after a devastating earthquake struck Myanmar.

“At first, I didn’t think she would survive," her husband, Ye Aung, told AFP. “I am overjoyed to receive such good news," added the man.

The couple has two sons: William, 8, and Ethan, 5.

Fresh Quake Jolts Myanmar

Meanwhile, there was no relief for the quake-hit country as it experienced another aftershock measuring 5.1 magnitude on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The seismic event was recorded around 2:50 pm near Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s capital, at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the USGS.

The extent of the damage it has caused or where there were any casualties from the latest earthquake, which hit the same region affected by Friday’s tremors, remains unknown.

India Rushes To Myanmar’s Aid

Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Saturday said that India is sending a field hospital with 118 personnel to Mandalay from Agra. The field hospital personnel will land in Nay Pi Taw later today.

Additionally, Indian Navy ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri, carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid, are en route to the port of Yangon, he added. Sources told CNN-News18 that two other ships also left for the quake-hit country with relief materials.

India has deployed an 80-member team from the Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to support rescue operations in a show of solidarity with Myanmar amid the devastation caused by a massive earthquake.

Earlier, India launched ‘Operation Brahma’ and sent nearly 15 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar. The Indian Air Force plane carrying the relief items landed in Yangon, the MEA spokesperson informed.

Sources told CNN-News18 that the total relief materials delivered to Myanmar via air sorties and naval ships have exceeded 130 tonnes. They added that more aid will be sent as needed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the military-led government in Myanmar, and said India stands in solidarity with the country in dealing with the devastation.

“Spoke with Senior General HE. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences for the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. As a close friend and neighbour, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, the USGS has projected that the death toll in Myanmar could exceed 10,000. The agency warned that the earthquake may have caused “high casualties and extensive damage."
