Anthony Edwards' ejection in the third quarter has caused the Minnesota Timberwolves to suffer a heavy loss 111-102 on Thursday night. Edwards picked up his second technical foul, leading to an automatic disqualification.

Now, with 16 technical fouls in the season, Edwards is facing a one-game suspension, which will be a major issue for the Timberwolves, scrapping them of their best player in the next matchup against the Utah Jazz. The NBA could still rescind one of his technical upon review, but if the decision stands, Minnesota will have to adjust without its leading scorer.

This is the third ejection of Edward’s career, and this also raises questions on his ongoing issue with his temper and how much it will impact the team.

What does this mean for the Timberwolves?

Edwards left the game with 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists, leading his team in scoring. Without him, the Timberwolves struggled offensively, managing to cut the Lakers' lead to three in the fourth quarter but later fell short.

The bigger problem now is his potential one-game suspension. If a player makes 16 technical fouls in the season, he will be automatically ejected for one game, as per NBA rules.

The timing is tough for Minnesota, who have lost four of their last seven games and risk slipping further in the Western Conference standings. Edwards is the most important offense for the Wolves, averaging 27.5 points per game, along with career highs in rebounds and minutes. It will be difficult for Minnesota as they are going to struggle to find consistent scoring, especially against a Jazz team that has been playing strongly recently.

NBA technical foul rules

As per NBA guidelines, once a player is ejected, they must immediately leave the playing area and remain in the locker room for the rest of the game. If anybody violated this rule, it could result in fines up to $50,000 and, in extreme cases, a team may be forced to surrender the game as a penalty.

Edwards was not only ejected but also remained on the court afterward and tossed the ball into the crowd at Crypto.com Arena, which likely means a higher fine is on the way.

For now, all eyes will be on the league’s decision regarding Edwards technical fouls. If he does serve a suspension, his next chance to return would be Sunday against the Phoenix Suns.
