) has gone back to its old policy, which was based on the proportion of incorrect and correct answers in all and individual subjects. The tie-breaking policy for NEET is necessary to assign ranks when two or more candidates achieve the same score, resulting in a tie.
The authority released the information brochure for
NEET 2024
last month, wherein it was decided that higher marks in biology, chemistry and physics (in that order), followed by a computerised draw with no human intervention will be followed to decide the ranks during ties.
However, a revised brochure has now been uploaded on the NTA portal, which reverts to the old policy. As per the revised brochure, a higher mark in each of the three subjects, followed by the proportion of incorrect answers and correct answers attempted in all and then individual subjects will be considered for breaking the tie. The same tie-breaking policy that was followed even last year – candidate getting higher marks in biology, chemistry and physics, followed by candidate with less proportion of incorrect and correct answers attempted in all subjects, followed by candidate with less proportion of incorrect and correct answers attempted in individual subjects starting with biology.
Parent representative Sudha Shenoy said that the decision to retain the old policy is better for students as it will be based on students’ performance and there will be an incentive for students who are careful about negative marking. “The one that they had decided earlier, and was released in the February brochure, was completely based on a ‘lucky draw’,” said Shenoy.
Till 2021, the age of the student was also considered under the tie-breaking policy after their scores in individual subjects and the proportion of negative marking. The older student got an advantage. In 2020, two students, a girl from Delhi and a boy from Odisha scored 720 out of 720, but the girl lost the top rank due to her younger age.
