The Nepalese police in Kathmandu opened fire on demonstrators on Monday who had taken to the streets in protest of the government’s regulations to ban 26 social media platforms.

These rules led to the blocking of major platforms such as Facebook, X and YouTube because they failed to register with authorities. At least 17 people were killed in the initial clashes.

The protests escalated into mass rallies, and tens of thousands of people surrounded the Parliament building, expressing outrage at the government’s enforcement of the registration requirement. Since then, the death toll has risen to 20, with more than 300 people injured.
