Netflix is bringing some big changes for its users which includes vertical videos like Reels and yes AI-powered search for better recommendations.

Netflix is going after Reels and AI platforms too
Netflix is testing a series of smart upgrades for its mobile app and is also working on a redesign of its TV interface. Aiming to make content discovery more intuitive and personalised, Netflix has announced that it’s testing a short-form vertical video feature on its mobile app. Similar to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, the feature also includes an AI-powered search tool.
In addition to launching this vertical video feature at its first-ever product and tech event, Netflix unveiled several other plans for the service. These include a redesign of the TV homepage and enhanced real-time recommendations to make navigation easier.
These updates are expected to roll out globally in the coming weeks on both iOS and Android devices, appearing as a tab on the in-app homepage for users.
Changes in the Netflix mobile app
Vertical video feed
Netflix app users will soon see a vertical feed to easily scroll through clips of its original titles, similar to Instagram Reels. Within this feed, users can instantly tap on buttons to watch the entire series or film immediately, save it to “My List’ option, or share it with friends. The company said that they have designed this feature to make discovery more engaging and playful.
Conversational AI search (iOS Beta)
Netflix is also rolling out a new search tool powered by generative AI. This feature, being tested on iOS, will allow users to type natural language commands like “I want something funny and upbeat," making the process of finding the right content feel more conversational and intuitive.
Smarter discovery tools
The home tab will now house multiple banners, suggesting users with brand-new content. On scrolling down, users can access rows with different collections of things recommended for users, like “Today’s Top Picks For You," “Your Next Watch," or “Only on Netflix." Tags like “Recently Added" or “Emmy Award Winner" will also be added to the content icon to provide extra information about a particular content. This makes the shows specifically tailored to each user, ultimately encouraging them to watch the full shows.
More accessible navigation
Netflix’s new homepage update also includes shortcuts for essential features like “Search" and “My List." With the update, users will get the shortcuts placed at the top of the page instead of the previously left-hand side, making them easier to access.
Moreover, Netflix said that the new app homepage will adapt to users’ moods and current interests more quickly, ensuring the recommendations users will see will be timely and tailored. The tech giants also claimed that the new homepage will have a clean and modern design that better reflects Netflix’s “elevated experience."
