The US is currently experiencing flash floods and heavy rainfall across various states, including New Jersey and Texas. In the latest update, two residents of New Jersey lost their lives overnight after their car was swept away during heavy rain in the area. While the identities of the deceased have yet to be confirmed, it has been reported that both victims were female.

Their car was swept away in Cedar Brook, which is designed to collect flood water during periods of heavy rain. The women’s bodies were found trapped inside the vehicle. Despite witnessing the car being swept away, first responders were unable to rescue them.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy confirmed the deaths on Tuesday, noting that the incident brings the total number of recent storm-related fatalities in the area to five. “We’re not unique, but we’re in one of these high humidity, high temperature, high storm intensity patterns right now. Everybody needs to stay alert," Murphy said following his inspection of the damaged area in Berkeley Heights, as cited by the Associated Press.

Flash floods may continue to cause disruption in the region, as the Weather Service (NWS) has warned residents of further storms on Tuesday, along with potential flooding in Florida and the mid-western US. The agency also reported that New Jersey received over 15 cms of rain within a matter of hours. Due to the severe weather, several flights were either delayed or cancelled at Newark Liberty Airport, according to the BBC.

Flash flooding also affected parts of New York City on Monday evening. According to reports, floodwaters surged through subway stations across the city. The NWS noted that New York City experienced its second-highest hourly rainfall in more than 80 years, sparking panic among residents.

Janno Lieber, CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, told ABC 7 that the city’s sewer system was overwhelmed by the rain, leading to flooding in underground stations. He added that services are now operating normally, with operations on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North commuter rail lines fully restored.
