New Zealand MP Laura McClure bravely spoke against the deepfake technology’s growing threat while holding in her hand a manipulated, naked image of herself in the Parliament last month.
While revealing the image, McClure said that it took less than five minutes to create this fabricated image online. The image was censored for broadcast purposes, however, it clearly showed the potential dangers posed by deepfakes.
“This image is a naked image of me, but it’s not real," the MP said while speaking in the House on Wednesday (May 14).
Speaking about the dangers of deepfakes, McClure said, “For the victims, it is degrading, and it is devastating. It gave me the creeps having to stand in Parliament and hold up the photo of myself, even knowing that it’s not actually me."
The MP also shared the image on her own Instagram account and wrote, “Today in Parliament, I showed an AI-generated nude deepfake of myself to show how real – and easy – these are to create. The problem isn’t the tech itself, but how it’s being misused to abuse people. Our laws need to catch up."
While speaking to Sky News, McClure called the moment “absolutely terrifying" and noted that even though she is aware that the image is fake, its realism had left her disturbed.
“I felt like it needed to be done; it needed to be shown how important this is and how easy it is to do, and also how much it can look like yourself," McClure said.
McClure expressed her desire to amend current legislation which ensures that sharing nude photographs without consent is illegal.
“I believe they are just as harmful, if not more, than the real thing because people can put you into all kinds of depraved videos, for example," the MP said. She underlined that the technology doesn’t have a problem, but the real problem is its misuse.
