The wait for the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to get longer. The party, sources told News18, is expected to take more time in finalising its new national president as its leadership shifts its immediate focus to completing the selection of state unit heads in five key states—Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi, and Haryana.

According to senior BJP sources, the names of the new state presidents in these politically crucial regions will be finalised before any decision is taken on the national president. The BJP has already appointed presidents in around 27 of its 37 organisational units, including in major states such as Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh, where new faces have been given chances.

“The party requires 19 state elections. The BJP has long crossed that mark. But as of today, the party is of the considered opinion that Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi, and Haryana state president elections should take place before going for the national presidential election," said a source, requesting anonymity.

This answers the most important political question in Delhi right now—With just five days left before the Monsoon Session of Parliament, will JP Nadda get his successor before this session begins?

BJP insiders also point to the fact that the selection of the national president is not merely an internal BJP affair. It requires consensus with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the BJP. The final choice of president typically must be agreeable to both, making the process not just complex but also collaborative.

After a brief lull, the organisational activity picked up since Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned from his five-nation foreign visit on July 10. But the BJP is yet to reach a consensus for the top job.

The BJP is looking for a team player with mass acceptability, while the RSS is believed to have stressed on the need to be deeply rooted in Sangh and BJP’s core ideology.

For now, the wait continues, and all eyes remain on the party’s central leadership and the RSS to see when a consensus candidate emerges.
