US President Donald Trump on Sunday said no country is “getting off the hook" for alleged unfair trade practices and said tariff exceptions announced for products on Friday are subjected to the existing 20% Fentanyl tariffs.

His remarks came as his administration is being seen as favoring China after smartphones, computers and other electronics were exempted from the ‘reciprocal tariffs’ on Friday. However, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said termed it only a “temporary reprieve" until the Trump administration develops a new tariff approach specific to the semiconductor industry.

Trump said that his administration is looking into semiconductors and the whole electronics supply chain in upcoming Security Tariff Investigations.

“What has been exposed is that we need to make products in the United States, and that we will not be held hostage by other Countries, especially hostile trading Nations like China, which will do everything within its power to disrespect the American People. We also cannot let them continue to abuse us on Trade, like they have for decades, THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!" Trump posted on Truth Social.

However, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said tariff exemptions announced Friday on electronics like smartphones and laptops are only a temporary reprieve until the Trump administration develops a new tariff approach specific to the semiconductor industry.

The world’s two largest economies have been locked in a fast-moving, high-stakes game of brinkmanship since Trump launched a global tariff assault that particularly targeted Chinese imports.

Tit-for-tat exchanges have seen US levies imposed on China rise to 145 percent, and Beijing setting a retaliatory 125 percent band on US imports.

The US side had appeared to dial down the pressure slightly on Friday, listing tariff exemptions for smartphones, laptops, semiconductors and other electronic products for which China is a major source.

The new exemptions will benefit US tech companies like Nvidia and Dell as well as Apple, which makes iPhones and other premium products in China.
