The Vatican’s announcement of Pope Francis’ critical health condition has made experts revisit the predictions of the famous French astrologer, Michel de Nostredame, popularly known as Nostradamus, who is said to have foretold the passing of an elderly pope.

The Vatican has confirmed that the pope, who has chronic lung disease, is “alert" but is receiving high levels of oxygen and has suffered mild kidney failure.

Nostradamus, known as the ‘prophet of doom,’ is believed by some to have predicted significant world events, including the Great Fire of London, Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, the September 11 attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic, and last year’s New Year’s Day earthquake in Japan.

In his famous book Les Propheties, published in 1555, Nostradamus gave the world numerous predictions about wars, natural disasters, political upheavals, and assassinations, according to the New York Post.

The latest of his vague and sometimes obvious predictions that has caught everyone’s attention centres found Pope Francis’ health, with many pointing to a passage where he seemingly predicts the death of an old pontiff and his successor.

All About His Prediction

Back in the 16th century, Nostradamus wrote, “Through the death of a very old Pontiff… a Roman of good age will be elected. Of him it will be said that he weakens his see… but long will he sit and in biting activity."

He then added: “In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End."

Pope Francis is currently on his 11th day of hospitalisation due to complications from a lung infection, which has led to the early stages of kidney insufficiency, according to the Vatican.

He was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties. His condition worsened, resulting in a respiratory crisis and the need for a blood transfusion.

A Vatican statement on Sunday confirmed, “The night passed quietly, the pope rested. He remains under close observation and continues to receive oxygen through nasal cannulas."

Doctors have expressed concern that the greatest threat to the pontiff is sepsis, a potentially fatal infection that could stem from his pneumonia and complicated lung infection. While his platelet count remains low, initial treatments have been considered “beneficial."

Speaking from St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan emphasised the severity of the situation, saying, “Our Holy Father Pope Francis is in very, very fragile health, and probably close to death."
