Amid escalating feud within Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family, Union Minister and LJP (Ramvilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Sunday expressed hope for a resolution soon. He also backed Lalu’s daughter Rohini Acharya’s emotional assertion of a daughter’s rights, even as he avoided commenting directly on her allegations.

Reacting to the controversy triggered by Rohini, who accused her younger brother and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav of mistreatment, Paswan said he can understand the emotional turmoil she was experiencing. He added that a daughter’s connection to her maternal home was no less significant than that of sons, and her feelings must be acknowledged with sensitivity.

“I do not believe that after marriage, the in-laws’ home is the only home for a daughter… I do not support this orthodox thinking… Yesterday when she said all this, I could understand that pain and I pray that all this gets resolved soon," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Despite political differences, Paswan reiterated his personal warmth towards Lalu Prasad’s children. “We might have had political differences, but I have always considered Lalu ji’s family my own. Be it Tejashwi, Tej, Misa or Rohini, I have considered them my siblings," he said, adding that unity within a family empowers individuals in public life.

His remarks came after Rohini Acharya announced she was quitting politics and publicly accused members of her own family of humiliation, abuse that triggered a political storm. She alleged that she was subjected to humiliation, including abusive language, an attempt to assault her with a slipper and her kidney being called “dirty".

She said she refused to compromise on her self-respect or abandon the truth, claiming this was the reason she faced such behaviour.

“Yesterday, a daughter, a sister, a married woman, a mother was humiliated, filthy abuses were hurled at her, a slipper was raised to hit her. I did not compromise on my self-respect, I did not surrender the truth, and solely because of this, I had to endure this insult…Yesterday, a daughter, out of compulsion, left behind her crying parents and sisters and came away; they tore me away from my maternal home… They left me orphaned…May none of you ever walk my path, may no family ever have a daughter-sister like Rohini," she said in a post on X.

Rohini, who donated a kidney to her father in 2022, said she was subjected to “filthy abuses" during a confrontation involving two of Tejashwi Yadav’s closest aides — RJD Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav and long-time associate Rameez. She accused them of maligning her by claiming she had “taken crores" from the family after the kidney donation, calling it an “insult beyond forgiveness".

In her post, Acharya wrote, “To all the married women, I will say that when there’s a son in your maternal home, never, ever save your God-like father; instead, tell your brother, the son of that house, to get his own kidney or that of one of his Haryanvi friends transplanted."

“All sisters and daughters should look after their own homes and families, take care of their children and their in-laws’ household without caring for their parents, think only about themselves," she said.

“I did what I did to save my God — my father — and today, the kidney is being called ‘dirty’… May none of you ever make a mistake like mine, may no family ever have a daughter like Rohini," she added.

Today, while speaking to the media, Acharya broke down and said that she has only severed ties with her brother and that her family is still standing by her.

“I have only cut ties with my brother. My family is still standing by me. They were crying when I left home," she said.

The dramatic family implosion came at a time when the RJD is grappling with its steepest political decline in years. With the Mahagathbandhan barely securing 35 seats in total, the blame game within party ranks has intensified, centring on Tejashwi’s election strategy and the role of his aides.
